Ethical dilemmas are found at every turn in tax practice. Ethical issues for tax practitioners typically arise from a conflict among the duties owed to the client, the system, and yourself. When conflicts arise, it is important to understand what standards will be used to judge your conduct.
This webinar will review Circular 230, select tax penalties, and discuss specific situations, both in the context of tax planning and return preparation. The required two hours of ethics each year makes some tax professionals roll their eyes because they say they have common sense and are good people, so what point is there in taking an ethics course? The problem is, one can be a “good person” and still run afoul of Circular 230 and various sections of the Tax Code, even if you think you’re doing the right thing. The webinar session covers the basics of the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility, and how it functions, and interacts with tax practitioners. We will also cover all sections of IRS Circular 230 and the sanction power of OPR. Throughout the course, we will work on stories of practitioners who have received sanctions from OPR under Circular 230.
